When you say you are learning Buddhism, it is equal to say that you are ready to know yourself –
- metaphysically, to know about the essence of self;
- psychologically, to know about the operation of self;
- socially, to know about the construction process of self.
When you say you are practising Buddhism, it is equal to say that you are ready to shed yourself.
After all, when you say you are practising nothing, it is equal to say that you have already dropped yourself – this is the true meaning of compassion.
In Buddhism, self, by definition, means suffering (dukkha).
