Narrative therapies

Narrative therapy seeks to be respectful, non-blaming approach to counseling and community work, which centres people as the experts in their own lives. It views problems as separate from people and assumes people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives. (Alice, 2000:2)

Rationale\Assumptions

  1. Words create world.
  2. Narrative is conditioned by discourse but narrative is also a pivot to resist discourse.
  3. …it’s not possible for us to interpret our experience without access to some frame of intelligibility…stories constitute this frame of interpretation. (White 1889:13)
  4. The increase of discursive resource is equal to the increase of choices and alternatives of living and its expression.
  5. …the story or self-narrative that determines which aspects of our lived experience get expressed. (White 1889:13)
  6. …the story of self-narrative that determines the shape of the expression of our lived experience. (White 1889:13)
  7. Most of the stories, no matter good or bad, are the result of co-authoring. Thus we can change someone’s story by particular re-authoring.
  8. Telling and re-telling uncover those over-looked and rejected pieces of experience. The detail and the richness of our story thus can be manifested and thickened.
  9. Circulation of the preferred story is a powerful device to cultivate new identities.
  10. Story telling is a means of problem solving. (McLeod, 1997)
